More information on the sites
RUINS:
Caracol:
Full Day: An early departure takes you to the newly excavated ancient
Mayan site of Caracol located deep in the Chiquibul Rain forest. Caracol
is a fascinating Mayan city, the inhabitants of which once defeated the
mighty Tikal, from Peten, Guatemala in the 7th century A.D. Enjoy the
drive and vistas of the Mountain Pine Ridge and the Chiquibul Forest
Reserves. The day will be spent touring three main plazas of Caracol,
watching for birds and wildlife, and enjoying a gourmet picnic lunch on
the grounds.
Xunantunch: Full or Half Day: Xunantunch, "the
Stone Maiden" is the primary destination today. After crossing the
Belize River via a hand-cranked ferry, explore and climb El
Castillo, which is 130 ft above the main plaza; this site consists of
six major plazas and 25 temples and palaces. El Castillo has an
outstanding view of the entire river valley. Optional shopping.
Cahal
Pech: Full or Half Day: The ruins of Cahal Pech are located within the
township of San Ignacio. Seven plazas and thirty-four structures have
been identified, including an ancient sauna. Most of the trees have
been left in place and bird watching can be excellent. At the entrance
of this beautiful site overlooking San Ignacio and the distant Spanish
Lookout, is a small museum with interesting exhibitions to prepare you
for your tour.
Pacbitun: Half day or combined with anything for
a full day. Pacbitun, or "stones set in earth," is a small center
flanking the granite Maya Mountains outside the village of San Antonio.
This center is compact and undeveloped. In a moderate agricultural
zone, ancient Maya inhabitants relied on land modifications such as
terraces on the hillsides to improve the overall productivity of the
area. The site, built up in the Late Preclassic and Classic periods,
has about 24 major structures. You can see several large open plazas as
you approach the site. The main plaza has one pyramid 54 feet tall. In
addition, plain and carved stela are found in the open plazas. Set away
from the public areas you can see one area with an enclosed plaza and a
set of private palace structures.
CAVES:
Barton
Creek Cave: Toured by canoe, this is one of the most beautiful
caves in Belize. This cave was once used by the Maya as a burial site
and for other ceremonial purposes. View original pottery and skeletal
remains of our Mayan ancestors dating back 2000 years. On your way to
the cave, you will drive through the Amish Community of Upper Barton
Creek.
Rio Frio Cave: Stalactites and stalagmites form an
eerie backdrop to an ancient worship place. An unexpected feature of
the cave is the sandy beach. Breathtaking!
WATERFALLS:
1000-foot
fall. The largest national park in Belize and is the oldest land
surface in Central America with various waterfalls. Visit the Hidden
Valley Falls (the picturesque 1000 foot waterfalls).
Misty
Mountain: You don't have to go far for this one. Misty Mountain has its
own 30 foot waterfall. Only a three minute walk from the bar and
restaurant. A nice place to relax or have your lunch.
Rio On pools: Swim in the cooling crystalline waters as it cascades over granite boulders.
Big Rock Falls: Swimming at Big Rock Waterfall, you can swim right into the falls and jump/dive off the big rocks.
Other interesting sites:
The Belize Zoo. Heavily involved in preservation and education, the Belize zoo is a must see.
Visit the Green Hills Butterfly farm and view about 25 species of tropical butterflies, including the Blue Morpho.
